Why there are Different Diet Plans for Women and Men?

Different Diet Plans for Women and Men

Reasons for different Diet Plans for Women & Men

Men and women differ in a lot of ways and that is true even in diets. We may notice that most of the time, women often are the ‘fatter sex’ and there are actually facts and explanations to explain this. This is also the reason why there are diets specially made for men and for women.

Why are Women fatter than Men?

Just to be clear, this is not applicable at all cases because there are also fat men but there is generally a higher percentage of fat women compared to men. There are several reasons why women seem to have more body fat and here are the reasons:

  • Biological – women have 25% of body fat at normal size where as men only have 15%. Women also require fewer calories per pound of body weight than men.
  • Hormones – female hormones make it easier to turn fat into food and we know that women often do the cooking at home.
  • Women are more prone to getting fat – birth control pills are taken by women and these pills cause the body to make higher amounts of fat and water. The hormone estrogen is the reason why there is increased storage of fat in the body. Women who are on the pill should lower their caloric intake by 10% to stay on the same weight.

What is the difference between Diet Plans for Men and Diet Plans for Women?

There are mainly three differences in the diet plans for men and diet plans for women. The reason for this is due to the fact that these two sexes have different biological needs and in order for a diet to be effective these differences should be considered. Another reason why men and women have different diets is because there are certain diseases that affect women more while in other cases occur commonly among men. An example would be osteoporosis that commonly affects women. Because of these, the nutritional content of the diets differ and these are as follows:

Iron

This is clearly one very essential nutrient and when a person lacks iron he/she may suffer from iron-deficiency anemia or IDA. A person who suffers from this will experience poor concentration and fatigue. Because women have menstruation, they are prone to having IDA and to overcome this, diet should include an increased intake of green vegetables. There are also men who are anemic but these cases are not as frequent compared to women.

Fiber

Fiber is a nutrient that aids digestion. People who do not consume that much fiber in their diet commonly suffer from hemorrhoids. Fiber, when digested, moves along the intestines cleansing it by removing undigested food as well as fat and cholesterol. This nutrient is needed more by men as they need 35-50 grams while women only need 20-25 grams.

Calcium

We are aware that we need calcium to keep our bones healthy and it also has something to do with our blood pressure. As mentioned earlier, women are more prone to developing osteoporosis which is why they need higher consumption of calcium rich foods.

Why do men diet differently than women?

Diet plans for men and diet plans for women are clearly different considering the fact that men and women have different biological needs as discussed earlier. But apart from these, dieting for men seem much easier and different, you may ask why? Here are the answers:

Men find it easier to say NO when it comes to food.

There was a study that showed men and women were presented with their favorite food while their brains were monitored by positron emission tomography (PET) scans. The brain activity results showed that men are better when it comes to suppressing hunger and desire to eat but women on the other still couldn’t help but crave for the foods even when told to divert their thoughts. Women are also prone to “emotional eating” because they are mostly exposed to eating when out with friends or even when depressed.

Men are mostly not as interested to nutrition compared to women.

Women are usually more eager to learn about nutrition. They take time to read food labels, understand more about nutrients and pay attention to healthy eating and even how to cook healthy meals. Men on the other hand wouldn’t be as focused to that stuff and would rather exercise and carry on physical activities.

Men and women diet for different reasons

Men mostly diet for health while women mostly diet for appearance. It is said that women diet because of social pressure and are the ones who carry the burden of social ostracism which would probably explain why being overweight is not that hard for men compared to women.

Men have more muscle mess

Men have more muscle mass than women do. Compared to women, men would carry on their weight loss by doing lots of exercise rather than getting too caught up on food. But calorie counting is something that will affect both genders. Exercise is still an essential part of weight loss and perhaps men apart from having more muscle mass are likely to lose weight more because of going to the gym more often compared to most women.
