Common Signs of an Allergy

Common signs of an allergy helps us tell if something wrong is happening to our body. According to statistics, around 50 million of Americans are affected with allergies of different kinds. Allergies happen because of the hypersensitivity of the immune system to harmless substances. Common causes of allergies are food, pollen grains, dust mites and pet dander.

Allergies are a slight imperfection in the immune system of a person. Because of this, when a person is exposed to a substance that is generally harmless, an allergic reaction occurs and these substances are referred to as allergens. Once a there is exposure to an allergen, the immune cells release a substance called histamine. When this happens, certain reactions are manifested outside our bodies which are the symptoms of an allergy. Histamine fights off the foreign bodies that enter our body and this is what causes allergic reactions. If a person experiences chronic allergies, he/she should consult a physician. But with the many allergies out there, various allergic reactions occur but nonetheless there are still common signs of an allergy which we can observe when a person is having an allergic attack. Through the common signs of an allergy, a person will be able to tell if he or she is indeed having an allergic attack.

Common Signs of an Allergy

Eyes

The common sings of an allergy can be seen in the eyes such as redness and itching of the conjunctiva which sometimes results to watery or dry eyes. In cases where allergies are severe, the symptoms of allergies around the eyes may appear inflamed and can turn to a black or bluish shade. If not treated, there is a possibility that the eye allergies will turn into more delirious conditions such as eye infections or allergic conjunctivitis. Eye infection may lead to blindness either temporarily or permanently which is why most physicians would prescribe antihistamines or antibiotics in the form of eye drops.

Nose, Sinuses, Airways

During the course of an allergic reaction, the nasal mucosa or the walls of the nose swell especially if its allergic rhinitis and the sinuses swell too. The most common signs of an allergy are the congestion of the sinuses, nasal obstruction and nasal discharge. The reason why sinus congestion happens is because of the inflammation and swelling of the sinus cavities which we commonly call sinusitis. The airways constrict especially during asthma causing difficulty in breathing as well as dyspnea, sneezing, and coughing.

Ears

Common signs of an allergy in the ears is the feeling of fullness. At times, some people complain of pain and even hearing problems because of the drainage that the Eustachian tube (an inner part of the ear) lacks.

A natural skin allergic reaction are hives which cause red, itchy welts in many parts of the body. During allergic reactions, hives can last for a few minutes up to more than 24 hours and they may be treated with the use of oral antihistamines or topical ones that may be directly to the affected area. Eczema on the other hand is common among children. On worst cases, eczema can cause severe itching on the skin, it may be treated with oral antihistamines or be applied with topical creams that have corticosteroids.
