Most Common Types of Allergies

Common Types of Allergies

Allergens are generally harmless substances that can cause irritation to oversensitive immune systems to certain people thus an allergic reaction happens. There are numerous types of allergies that people have but there are really common types of allergies that affect almost more than half of the population in the US alone. There are allergens that are said to be the main reason for nearly all of the symptoms of an allergy.

Common Allergies

Pollen

Pollens are powdery substances that are produced by grasses, trees, weeds and other types of plant that play a big role in their reproduction. They also happen to be the most common types of allergen. People who are allergic to pollen often show symptoms such as frequent sneezing, runny nose, itchiness in the eyes and nose and frequently coughing because of itchiness in the throat. Because these pollens are so small and light, people allergic to it often experience attacks on windy days and usually in the morning. Treatments for this are allergy shots, medication and recommendation of staying indoors as much as possible during times of peak pollen seasons.

More Common Allergies

Food

According to health experts there is a rise in people affected with food allergy around the world, in the US alone there is an estimated 4% of the population who suffer from this type of allergy. The ones who are highly at risk are children particularly those who aged 3 years and below. Foods that commonly cause allergies are peanuts, sea foods such as fish and shellfish, nuts such as cashews, walnuts and almonds and peanuts and milk and eggs. Nausea and vomiting are the most common symptoms of mild food allergy attacks but for those who are highly sensitive to these foods can undergo anaphylactic shock this is why people who have severe food allergies have with them epinephrine injections all the time so that in case of attacks they can be treated immediately.

Dust Mites

These microscopic creatures seem to not exist at all because we can’t see them with the naked eye but they are everywhere—homes, schools, office, etc. They eat fungi, bacteria and dead skin cells. People are not really allergic to dust mites but to the proteins that are found in their waste products. Dust mites do not live in high-altitude places and they are commonly found in bed sheets, pillows and carpets which are the reasons why if you are allergic to dust, it is important to regularly clean your place.

Animal Dander

As much as we love our pets and animals, they too can actually cause allergies to many people. People who are allergic to animal dander are so common that one out of allergic people is affected with it. Most people think that the reason why we are allergic to animals are because of their hair but even hairless pets can cause allergies because it is not what’s in their hair rather it is what’s in their dander that contains proteins causing the allergies. These microscopic substances are carried in the air and are inhaled by humans.

Although there are available allergy shots and medications to fight off these allergic reactions, it would be best to avoid the things that you know are allergic to. For those who are not sure if they are or are not, consult an allergist to find out to which substances you are allergic to.
