Almost all people have
allergies the reason for this is because of a disorder in the immune system of
the person who has it. Because of this, people who are allergic to something
may also be allergic to other substances but in varying degrees. Most of the time,
allergies are caused by foods. There is a high rate of allergies with foods
such as eggs, peanuts and shellfish. Allergens, substances that cause
allergies, that cause food allergies does not have to be necessarily ingested
for an allergic reaction to happen, in fact, some people are highly sensitive
to it that even with physical contact, they get allergies already. In the US
alone, almost more than half of the population is affected with allergies which
makes a lot of people ask, why do we develop allergies?
What are Allergies and What Causes It?
An allergy is a disorder
of the immune system that is hypersensitive. Because of the hypersensitivity of
the immune system, allergic reactions happen when the body gets in contact with
harmless substances. Substances that cause allergies are referred to as
allergens. When an allergic reaction happens, there is excessive activation of
the white blood cells namely mast cells and basophils by an antibody called IgE
or immunoglobulin E. This is the reason why inflammatory responses happen which
can be life-threating.
Why People Have It?
Although there is still no clear explanation as
to what is the exact cause of allergies, theories suggest that allergies are
because of genetics. While some health experts believe that it is because of
environmental factors others theorize that it could possibly be a combination
of environmental and genetics factors.
Different Types of Allergies
Allergies come in
different types and are caused by different things. Most common types of
allergies are caused by food, asthma and skin allergies. When allergies
are not treated properly, it may cause infections in the long run.
Risk Factors
People who are prone to
developing allergies are those who have family members with asthma and other
types of allergies. Children are those who are commonly affected with allergies
because they have weaker immune systems. According to studies, people who have
asthma are highly at risk of developing other kinds of allergies.
One of the best ways to avoid allergies is by avoiding the allergen that causes the allergic reactions. This is the best way to avoid problems that may lead to severe allergy such as anaphylaxis. If your immune system is highly sensitive to a certain allergen, your doctor may prescribe epinephrine which usually comes in the form of an “Epipen” which is injected to a person when allergy attacks happen. Getting epinephrine shots will let the symptoms of the allergy lessen until emergency treatment is given. We should remember that just because a person is already given a shot of epinephrine, there is still the need to bring that person to the hospital because the shot does not cure the allergic reaction it only lessens it plus there is a possibility that the symptoms of the allergy attack will recur. There are people who have severe allergies that immunotherapy is required and during which, a person will be receiving shots of small amounts of the allergen in order to let the body develop immunity to the cause of his or her allergy.
