Tips on Aging Healthily | Healthy Balanced Diet

Getting old doesn’t necessarily have to be about dealing with sickness and other chronic health problems that most elder people we see go through with. The truth is, aging healthily is actually not impossible because you can always age by not fighting it rather by adjusting to the changes occurring not just physically but in other aspects too. It is said that being able to deal with all these changes is healthy as it lessen stress levels which makes a great impact on aging healthily.

What is Healthy Aging?

Aging healthily means being able to incessantly allowing yourself to learn new things discover new hobbies and be able to adapt to change. The best way to do this is by staying active physically and socially and develop a better relationship with your family and to the community too. Because of the many changes that happen to the body as we age, most people feel anxious about it but this does not have to be the case. Being able to age healthily is having that sense of purpose and the excitement to live life.

Tips to Healthy Aging 

Physical

    One of the changes that we go through as we get older is how we deal with food and the body. At this point, metabolism is slower and taste and smell changes too causing slow digestion which affects appetite and food choices too. To deal with this, you may want to learn to adapt to these changing needs, here’s how:

    1.    Eat-up high fiber fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Fiber is really important because elder’s digestive system is much slower and fiber including vegetables and whole grains lessens the load of work of the digestive system because they promote regular bowel movement which means lesser stomach problems.

    2.    Make food look more appealing and tasty. As we get older, our sense of taste and smell change and because of this, loss of appetite happens, compromising nutritional need. A good way to deal with this making your food more appealing and make it tastier too.

    3.    Keep yourself hydrated. A common problem amongst adults is dehydration due to body changes happening. Dehydration doesn’t just mean lacking water but it can also low energy levels.

    Mental

      Being mentally fit is crucial when we get older in order for us to still function well and be able to do our daily activities. This is perhaps one of the most challenging things to deal with as we get older that some even end up depressed but nevertheless there are ways to deal with this.

      1. Get into new intellectual pursuits. Learning is a process that happens every day and doesn’t stop in just the four corners of the classroom. You can always learn new things by developing new hobbies and interests.

      2. Get into fun memory games. There are numerous fun and exciting memory games for adults out there. You always have the option of buying readily available puzzles and board games or better yet come up with your very own.

      3. Scan through your diary or photos from time to time. Doing this heightens your mental alertness and sharpens your memory because you get to recall things and reminisce about significant events and people in your life. It also develops a sense of positivity as you recall all those beautiful memories and people in your life. 

      Social

        Retirement is one of the things that can actually lower your social activity but you always have the opportunity to have a social life even after retirement. Depending on your interest, there are so many ways on how to go on with meeting new people and gaining new friends.

        1.  Joins clubs, associations, groups and organizations according to your interest. It doesn’t mean that just because we’ve gotten older we should stop doing things that we love. You can always do things or find out more about your interest by joining groups that have the same interest as you do.

        2. Travel to different places, experience cultures and meet people and gain new friends. Now that you’re retired, what better thing to do than go and see the world. This is a really liberating experience plus a great opportunity to gain new friends.

        3.  Join community activities in your place. Our neighborhood never runs out of things to do. Now that you have all the time in the world, why not volunteer light work on your place. If you are a retired medical practitioner, you can volunteer to offer charity works. This gives you a sense of purpose and fulfillment as you contribute in your little way to society.
