According to Wikipedia, low carb diet or also known as low-carbohydrate diet is a dietary program that restricts a person from consuming carbohydrate for the purpose of weight control or for treatment of obesity. In a low carb diet, foods rich in digestible carbs such as bread and pasta are being replaced with foods rich in proteins and fats such as meat, poultry products, eggs, soy, etc. as well as foods with low carbohydrate content such as fruits and vegetables. Low carb diets do not necessarily restrict the consumption of calories because from eating protein alone, there is that less chance of over eating.

The great thing about low carb diets is that is helps a person cut out big amounts of starches and sugars in the diet. Foods that are high in starch and sugar are the main reason why some people end up having high insulin blood levels thus causing diabetes in the long run. Because low carb diets are easy to follow, it is also made in such a way that a person can safely stay on low carb diets for a long period of time in order to make sure that their weight is maintained and is within a healthy range.

Presenting the disadvantages of low carb diets are not meant to destroy the image of the diet rather it is done to show a person if the pros or cons outweigh the other more. Knowing the downside of a diet will also help us determine if low carb diets are really meant for you. Every diet has both good and bad sides and low carb diets are not exempted from this.

The reason for this is because when our bodies run short of carbs, our bodies don’t just turn to fats for energy but protein as well which are mostly found at the muscles, and from there it turns them to glucose. The lost muscle tissue may be rebuilt; water restored resulting to weight gain mostly as fat.
  • Most people after finishing a low carb diet program end up carb binging.
  • If you have severely restricted your body from consuming carbs, your body produces ketone bodies for energy. When this happens, a person is in a ketosis state and can be noticed to have smelly breath similar to the smell of nail varnish and can further cause fatigue and nausea.

Time and again much emphasis has been made that before engaging into low carb diet or any diet all, we should first consult our physician and dietician. Our bodies may have same principles but they work in different ways and paces as our metabolism differs. There are various factors to consider before we get into a low carb diet such as the reason why we want to do it, our goals, why we need or want to lose weight, current health condition and so forth. Every diet has a disadvantage and this is true, but these negative effects can be prevented if the low carb diet is done with the right approach.
