It is a fact that the diseases we can possibly develop are largely due to the genes that we inherit but diet and lifestyle are also crucial factors we must look in to. The occurrence of cancer is rapidly rising amongst the population in many parts of the world. Fortunately, risk factors such as diet and lifestyle are things that we can modify in order to avoid this life-threatening disease. To be knowledgeable always leaves us a step ahead most especially when it comes to health and fighting diseases such as cancer.
What is Cancer?
Cancer can occur to a person without it leaving any signs or symptoms hence it is sometimes being called the “silent disease”. Although signs and symptoms vary depending on what type of cancer a person has, how big it has grown and how much it has metastasized (spread) to other tissues or organs. These signs and symptoms may appear at any part of the body that has been gravely affected by the cancer cells.
Cancer starts with a group of abnormal cells in a certain part of the body and these cells multiply, it forms into a malignant tumor. As it grows, nearby organs, tissues and blood vessels may be affected. With this, signs and symptoms of cancer may start to manifest. If cancer has spread into a critical part of the body such as the brain, even a small tumor can cause problems and show signs and symptoms.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Cancer
Fever
Whenever our body’s immune system is disturbed, fever is perhaps the first thing that will show. It is also common among people with cancer but in most cases, health experts have observed that fever usually shows after it has metastasized. Almost all cancer patients manifest fever at one point most especially during treatments where the immune system gets disturbed making it difficult to fight infection. In other cases, fever could be an early sign of cancer such as leukemia or lymphoma.
Unexplained weight loss
People affected with cancer mostly experience a sudden loss in weight. Losing as much as 10 pounds or more for no apparent reason could be the first few signs of cancer. Most of the time, cancers that affect organs such as the lungs, esophagus, stomach or pancreas includes unexplained weight loss as one of its signs and symptoms.
Fatigue
Fatigue is a condition where a person experiences extreme tiredness that does not get better even with rest. This is said to be one of the signs to look after most especially when cancer grows. Like in most signs and symptoms, this will vary depending on what type of cancer a person has for it may be an early sign while in some it could happen at a later stage of cancer.
Pain
Pain is may show early in certain cancers such as bone or testicular. In brain cancers, headaches are one of its early symptoms and this headache does not get any better even after enough rest and sleep or medication. In most cases of cancer, pain is a sign that cancer has already spread from its primary tumor.
Skin changes
Cancers that involve the skin will show signs and symptoms on this organ but there are also other types of cancers that may also show these:
- Itching (pruritis)
- Darker looking skin (hyperpigmentation)
- Yellowish skin and eyes (jaundice)
- Excessive hair growth
- Reddened skin (erythema)
In order to tell that
you really do have cancer, a physician will have to perform a series of
diagnostic tests to confirm it. It does not necessarily mean that if you have
any of these signs and symptoms you already have cancer as there are also other
diseases that show these signs and symptoms too. If you notice that you are
experiencing one or most of the signs and symptoms stated above for a certain
period of time, it would be best to have it checked by a physician to find out
the reason behind it.
