We may all have heard of it but not all of us are aware of what it really is. Tumors are considered to be threatening to a person’s health because there are instances when it can lead to cancer. But having tumor should be first classified whether its benign or malignant to be able to determine if it is cancerous or not.
What is a Tumor?
In the medical field, tumors are also known as neoplasm. Tumors are a group of cells that have grown abnormally and these cells have either stopped developing or have died normally tumors happen when cells multiply in beyond normal amounts. Tumors can either be benign or malignant depending on which tissue it is one and how fast it spreads throughout the body. Benign tumors are said to be found in local tissues while malignant tumors can spread in many parts of the body.
The Difference between Benign and Malignant Tumors
Malignant Tumors
Malignant tumors are referred to as cancer. This type of tumors spread in many parts of the body. This may be determined by the extent of the spreading of cancer cells in the body. Malignant tumors have cells that can be found in other parts of the body. Say for example lung cancer that has spread to the brain. The cancer cells in the lungs may also be found in the brain which has cancer cells that are of the same type from the primary cells of which tumor has spread.
Benign Tumors
Benign tumors are not as health-threatening compared to malignant tumors but certain benign tumors should not be taken for granted. Say for example, benign tumors of the brain. This could bring health problems because of how the brain works. A diagnostic test was done that showed benign tumors actually have sharp borders whereas malignant tumors have unclear invasive borders.
How a Tumor becomes Cancerous
A study was done by the Stanford Medicine Cancer Center showing how a normal cell can turn cancerous and according to them, the process of oncogenesis occurs and tumor suppression. Oncogenesis is the process where a gene turns to be a cancer gene. During the mutation of DNA, oncogenes cause a cell to become cancerous and multiply in overwhelming numbers. How the tumor spreads largely involves the signaling between the cells. This is why it is important to understand what goes on inside a gene, what could possibly wrong with it, when it becomes cancerous, the study of molecules and nuclear transports as well as the signal processing and gene multiplication.
What happens during Tumor Suppression?
Tumor suppression is also part of the process of how a normal cell turns cancerous. Suppressor genes as the name suggest suppresses the growth of tumor which causes cell death. According to a study done by the Stanford University, suppression manages cell division during instances such as lack of growth factors, DNA damage and cell defects. When the suppressor genes mutates, the cells continues to grow causing the formation of a tumor. Apart from the suppressor genes, the DNA repair gene works by correcting cell damage when the DNA reproduces. In this case of mutation, the cells were not corrected along the process. Mutation of the cells causes cancer most especially if mutation happens in oncogenes or suppressor genes.
