According to health experts, normal discomforts are frequent urination, backache (especially when the mother reaches the third trimester where the baby’s weight is getting heavier) and heartburn. Although there are pregnancies that do not encounter any problems at all, it is still important to take note of danger signs to ensure the safety of both mother and child.

Severe Headache and Visual Problems
When a mother experiences severe and frequent headaches, as well as numbness, garbled speech and blurred vision should be something checked by the doctor. These may be signs of preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is an onset of eclampsia which is a pregnancy-induced hypertension. This can be very dangerous for both mother and the baby because if left untreated, it may cause seizures. If you experience the symptoms listed, consult your physician immediately.
High Blood Pressure
Another symptom of preeclampsia and possibly toxemia is when a mother has swollen hands, feet, face and eyes accompanied with high blood pressure. Other symptoms include headaches and blurred vision. According to the University of Iowa, these signs are common usually during the 20th week of pregnancy and the end of the first week after the mother’s delivery. If the mother is left untreated, this may lead to seizures and at worse cases, coma. Mild cases will require the mother to have complete bed rest and for severe cases, the mother needs to be admitted to the hospital for close monitoring and medications are prescribed to manage blood pressure levels.

Sudden Abdominal Pain and Cramping
When a mother experiences sudden and severe especially continuous cramping on the lower abdomen, she should have it checked because this could be one of the danger signs of pregnancy. There are also reported cases when the mother experiences lower back pain in line with abdominal cramps. These signs could indicate miscarriage or injury at the abdominal area but it could be an indicator of appendicitis, kidney stones and gallbladder stones. Experiencing abdominal pain or cramps should be immediately reported to the doctor.
Decreased or Limited Fetal Movement
Mothers will be able to take note of the kicks of the baby inside their womb after 20 weeks. If you happen to notice that your baby does not move much or does not move at all, try lying down for a while and take in a sweet drink and check if you get a response from the baby. If there is still no movement check with your doctor and you may be recommended to get an ultrasound to check on your baby.
Vaginal Bleeding
There are instances during the first trimester when other pregnant women experience vaginal spotting and sometimes bleeding but nonetheless, it still recommended that you notify your physician about this. The danger signs during pregnancy are when you experience vaginal bleeding during the first 12 weeks because this may be a sign of miscarriage. If you experience this during the later periods of pregnancy, this may be an indication of placental abnormality or something else. Contact your physician immediately and take note of the amount and color of the bleeding.
