What is Menstrual Cramps

Menstrual cramps are brought about by dysmenorrhea or painful menstruation. Although not all women experience it, there is still a vast majority of women who suffer from menstrual cramps. Women who suffer from dysmenorrhea experience cramps which can either be mild, annoying to severe pain. Health experts believe that making adjustments in your diet, if possible, two weeks ahead of your menstruation can add relief to cramps as there are certain foods which can help relieve it.

What are Menstrual Cramps?

Menstrual cramps is characterized by aching cramps specifically at the lower abdomen and is usually noted by women before menstruation occurs. Doctors advise women who suffer from menstrual cramps to make changes in their diet as a means of prevention or treatment. The most common reliefs for menstrual cramps are prescribed or over-the-counter medications, hot baths and heating pads.

Foods that Help Relieve Menstrual Cramps

-Low-salt Foods

 Foods that are low in salt or have no salt content should be eaten before and during the onset of a menstrual period. The reason for this is because salt is responsible for fluid retention and bloating eventually causing cramps. It would be best to go for fresh foods. If you happen to buy canned, frozen or packaged foods, be sure to choose those that are low in salt.

-Fish and Flax Seed

One of the reasons why women experience menstrual cramps is because of a chemical called prostaglandin which also causes uterine spasms. But foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids help in lowering the production of prostaglandin. An ideal amount of 3 to 4 ounces of omega-3 fatty acids which we can obtain from fish such as tuna, sardines, mackerel and salmon can help in relieving menstrual c

-Grains, Fruit and Vegetablesramps. Another good source of omega-3 fatty acids is fresh flax seed.

Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are helpful in relieving menstrual cramps. It would be best to eat them 2 weeks ahead of your period in order to avoid cramping. Apart from helping you feel relief from cramps, you will also get other health benefits such as fiber which helps in constipation which is also common in women with menstrual cramps.

-Vitamin C-Rich Foods

We are aware that vitamin C is one of the things we need to help boost our immune system as it is an antioxidant but this water-soluble vitamin can also help in relieving menstrual cramps. Taking in 1,500 mg each day is ideal. You can include vitamin C in your diet from citrus fruits, tomatoes, broccoli and celery to name a few.

-Peppermint

Peppermint is often used for its minty flavor and is usually found in breath mints, sweets and even in toothpaste. It is one useful plant because it also contains antiviral properties that help in reducing stomach pain, indigestion and even menstrual cramps. You may use it to relieve menstrual cramps by adding it to your food before your period starts or if you wish you may add in its leaves when drinking hot tea. If you are currently on medication, it would be best to consult your physician about this.
