Dealing with Teens

The teenage years are perhaps the most exciting part of a person’s life. Being at this stage means discovering so many things about one’s self as well as learning to gain friends for life and other things such as heart breaks, dates and so forth. But for most parents, especially single mothers, dealing with them can be really frustrating at times. Thus, here are a few things you may want to keep in mind when dealing with them to help them with their struggles as well as nurture them so you may guide them to the right path.

Tips on how to Deal with Teens

Value Respect and Be Understanding

Psychologists suggests that the being mistake that parents/single mom can make is to enforce their opinions to their teenage children. It is important that parents as adults also take time to listen to what their teens have to say for this is a way of showing respect and a good start to trying to understand them. This is perhaps because being in the teenage years is the start of the process of coming out of their shell and developing their views in life. Being a good parent is taking time to listen and allowing their to grow with your guidance.

Understand How It’s Like to be In their Place

All of us have been once teens too thus we know how it feels like to be in their place but not every parent seems to give leeway for this. When parents or a single parent tries to discipline their child, before getting into a nasty fight or spilling painful words, parents should be extra patient during their child’s teenage years. Teens are often times stubborn because they are still at the process of learning things their way, the best thing for parents to do in disciplining their child is taking time to sit and talk in a calm manner. Establishing a friendship bond with your teen is a good start to making them listen to you.

Take Time to Listen and Be Open-Minded

When kids turn to be teens, they will start wanting to have their own space, try to take control of situations they are in and often times be at a confused state. Thus, the best thing to do here is to give time to listen to your child and because times have changed, an open mind is needed and an open heart will follow.

Never Argue, Instead Reason out in a Subtle Manner

Because teens are at the experimental point of their lives, they start getting into trial and error situations. This is why close guidance is needed here but this will be difficult if they shut their doors and because this is the one thing parents would not want to happen, what you can do is try to not getting into an argument. Say for example you found out your teen has learned to drink liquor or is starting to smoke, instead of yelling and getting mad, you can ask your teen for their spare time and talk to them. This will let your teen feel that he/she is indeed a teen because you talked to him/her like an adult and you took time to listen to what he or she has to say. You can also point out your reasons in a subtle manner rather than getting into a fight.

Dealing with teens can be a challenging task most especially if you are a single mom but there are ways on how you can become friends with your own child. This is a crucial part of their lives and they need all the love and guidance they can get as this could be also a tough phase for them. Thus, as parents, your teenage child should get all the support he/she can get in order to ensure them of a bright future ahead of them.
