For expecting women, the whole course of pregnancy can cause a mix of emotions from excitement to anxiety and at times confusion. There certain things that moms-to-be should avoid but health experts have reasons for this. Pregnant women commonly experience morning sickness and fatigue but these are normal because of the physical and hormonal changes occurring to the body but in most days, you will feel just fine. But nonetheless, it is a fact that pregnant women are vulnerable because the body is placing all its energy towards the growth and development of the baby inside the womb. This is why pregnant women should be careful when it comes to things that they are doing.
Things to Avoid when Pregnant
Dyeing of one’s hair
Pregnant women should not dye their hair because it contains perilous chemicals. When exposed to high doses, the chemicals present in hair dye can be harmful and this may affect the baby too. You can opt for using highlights instead because they do not contain harmful chemicals compared to hair dye. Another alternative is by using vegetable dye such as henna for coloring one’s hair.
Going Scuba Diving
There is still no scientific explanation that scuba diving can harm the baby but there have been reports saying that there is high incidence of miscarriage on pregnant women who have gone scuba diving. The possible reason for this is because of the changes in oxygen levels that have been linked to premature labor which is why scuba diving is not recommended. A good alternative for this would be swimming or snorkeling.
Use the Sauna
Because of the heat in the sauna, it may raise a pregnant woman’s body temperature and when it reaches 102ºF it may increase the possibility of brain and spine defects to the growing baby and can even cause miscarriage. Instead, go for the regular facials and body scrubs to relax and skin cleansing.
More Things to Avoid When Pregnant
Wearing High-heels
Being pregnant does not mean being unfashionable with the many choices of clothing but pregnant women should stay away from wearing heels or if you wish to wear them, you must wear them with utmost caution. The reason for this is because as your belly grows bigger, the gravity of your body shifts causing you to be more prone to stumble and trips. It can be perilous for both mother and child because falls can actually cause placental abruption where in the placenta separates from the walls of the uterus or cause trauma to the baby. If you should wear heels, go for the kitten heel or low heels.
Paint the Nursery
Paints contain chemicals and solvents that can be harmful and when inhaled, it can be absorbed not just by the mother but the baby too. Although the effects are still unknown, a study done by the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program showed that women are frequently exposed to solvents place their growing baby to be highly at risk of developing gastroschisis which is a condition where the stomach is open and the intestines protrude. If you plan on doing the paint job of your baby’s room, it is highly recommended that you use “eco-paints” and make sure that the room is well ventilated. Don’t forget to wear a mask and keep your skin protected by wearing long-sleeves and gloves.
