Healthy habits for kids should be taught while they are young. At an early age, instilling in your kids healthy habits will go a long way for them. We all know that living healthy starts with eating the right foods and having good habits as well. It is crucial to make your kids understand that healthy habits for kids bring about numerous benefits for them. Depending on your child’s age and level of understanding, you can slowly talk to them about healthy habits and most importantly be a good role model to them. 

Importance of Healthy Habits for Kids

It is said that children who adapt healthy habits for kids early in life are those who eat healthy as they get older. The fact that kids learn mostly by example, parents and guardians need to know that they play a big part in instilling these healthy habits to them. Healthy habits in kids are very important due to the following reasons:

Preventing Diseases

    First thing’s first, healthy habits for kids keep them away from developing different kinds of diseases because once you adapt healthy habits, everything follows from eating the right kind of foods, being hygienic and so on.

    Lowering the risk of Obesity

      Obesity is becoming an alarming public health issue because not only are adults affected by this but so are kids too. One healthy habit that can help fight off this common health issue is by engaging in regular exercise. With this, parents should also teach their kids about handling large portions of food, sugary drinks and too much junk food.

      Active Lifestyle

        Although kids are already active and up and about most of the time, parents and guardians should still encourage their kids to get into a healthy active lifestyle. A good way to do this is by allowing them to engage in sports or perhaps do something active together. Make this a habit for them and for you too and you will see later on in life how they have adapted to this healthy lifestyle. Make this a part of their healthy habits for kids.

        Hygiene

          This is perhaps the very thing that we want kids to learn at an early age. It is said that hygiene gives anyone a first impression and if a person is really neat and good-smelling, chances are no one would hesitate to come near him/her. You can start off by teaching your child simple hand washing before and after eating or after playing or any activity that involves the hands. Even if your child doesn’t know how to take a bath on his/her own, start teaching your child the importance of having hair washed and shampooed properly, body scrubbing and using soap. Explain to your child that being clean protects him/her from diseases.

          Hand Washing

            Although hand washing is also part of hygiene, this is one aspect that should be emphasized to kids. Let your child understand what it is and why everyone should do it. Hand washing should be done before and after meals, after using the bathroom, after playing and after school. It would be best to let your child have with them their handkerchief or tissue. Teach the proper ways of blowing their nose and the proper place to do it. Constantly reminding your child lets them remember it often. Healthy habits for kids all start with learning to always wash hands.

            Using the Bathroom

              Make your kids understand that in most places that we go there are bathrooms. From here, you explain to them why using it properly is important. Set an example and tell them to always flush the toilet after use. Also teach them to not hold anything in the bathroom especially if it’s the public toilet they are using to avoid spreading germs. Don’t forget to tell them to make sure that the shower and faucet are turned off properly so water won’t be wasted. This healthy habits for kids is important because it largely affects hygiene.

              Exercise

                For kids, the best form of exercise for them would be letting them get into sports such as basketball, soccer, swimming, tennis and lots more. Sports is not just a great work out but it is a great outlet for them to channel out their long lasting energy. If your kids are not interested in any, don’t worry. You can always let them go with you when you head out walking, jogging or biking. Allow them to play outdoors for an hour outside so they can breathe in fresh air and not get stuck watching TV or playing the computer inside. Healthy habits for kids isn’t just about eating or being hygienic but it involves exercise too.

                Oral Care

                  Kids and even grown-ups wouldn’t want to experience toothache. In order to avoid toothache and tooth decay, teach your kids to brush their teeth frequently. Brushing of teeth should be done at least twice a day but pay attention to teaching them the proper way of brushing the teeth. Teach your child to brush teeth at least 2 minutes to make sure the teeth are clean. Healthy habits for kids should include visiting the dentist regularly is also important to ensure that your child’s teeth are really healthy.

                  Eating Habits

                    At an early age, your child should be a fan of eating fruits and vegetables rather than junk food and a good way to do this is by exposing them to healthy food. You may want fruits to be accessible in your home and other healthy foods so that whenever they feel hungry, they can reach for it right away. Take time to prepare meals that are tasty and healthy for them. Be fun with their utensils such as colorful spoons or cute place mats so they get attracted to eating. You can also involve them in the kitchen when you are preparing meals or buying out at the grocery.

                    Sleep

                      Getting enough sleep is very important for both young and old. It would be best to set a regular time for them to sleep each day and be strict about this. This way, your child gets enough rest and learns to manage his time by doing homework first when getting home instead of watching TV or playing. Having at least 8 hours of sleep is very important for kids because they are still growing and they need all the rest they can get from being active.
