Tips on Cooking for Kids

Cooking for kids is truly one enjoyable experience and it is a great thing that even young kids can learn to do too! Cooking is a great way for parents and kids to bond and also a great start to teaching kids to understand the importance of being healthy and start it all off with the food they eat. With this fun activity, kids learn to appreciate healthy food and love eating them. Below are a few tips that you can keep in mind if you want to engage your kids in a cooking activity. Cooking for kids is one enjoyable experience for both child and parents.

Tips on Cooking for Kids

Research on Easy to Make Recipes

In order for cooking for kids to be a really fun experience for you and your kids, you may want to look for recipes that are easy to do. You can start off with making fruit and vegetable salads, tasty sandwiches and smoothies. When your kids seem to get bored making them, you can then move on to other recipes. You may also bake and let your kids crack the eggs, roll the dough or arrange the cookies on the oven tray. The key here is to make them really involved in the whole process if possible. Of course, if it requires frying or getting close to fire, you may want to explain them that they are too young to do such things and they eventually will as they get older.

Take this as an Opportunity to Teach them to Wash their Hands

Washing hands is one routine that we will be brining with us until we get old. Explain to your kids why washing hands is important before and after eating and cooking. This way, they appreciate and understand why they have to do it. Cooking for kids does not only involve just cooking but instilling good habits in them too.

Make Sure the Kitchen Is Safe for the Kids

Although the kitchen may seem such an interesting place for the youngsters, you may want to make sure that before your cooking activity, the place is ‘kid-friendly’. If your kids couldn’t reach the counter tops or tables, you may want to prepare stepping stools for them. Of course, keeping the sharps on a safe place where they won’t be able to reach it would be the number one thing you need to consider. There are kitchen utensils that you may buy at stores that are especially for kids so they can get involved in chopping and other kitchen activities. The experience on cooking for kids should be fun and safe.

        Set Safety Rules

Even if your kitchen is as safe as you think, don’t forget to set rules. Tell your kids the precautions about keeping a safe distance in hot pots, the stove and the oven. You need to make them understand the consequences when they get near these danger zones and assure them that when they get old enough, they will have access to the whole kitchen—this could be something they could look forward to.

Explain the Proper Usage of Utensils

If your kids are still toddlers, they won’t be able to hold knives and other sharp objects in the kitchen. But they may be allowed to use it with your proper guidance. If your kids happen to be old enough to be taught, you may let them use other sharp utensils such as can openers and even knives if they need to cut fruit or soft ingredients.

Let them do a Little Math!

The kitchen is a place where measuring and time management are crucial and this could be a chance where you can incorporate them with your kids in your cooking sessions. They learn to appreciate Math and even become expert time-keepers!

Make Cleaning more of an Activity Rather than an Obligation

We have to admit that not all of us are big fans of cleaning but we still need to do it. For sure, this could also be something kids won’t be big fans of but you can still turn things fun for them by making cleaning more of an activity rather than a heavy responsibility. Turn it to a game or paly some music while doing it.

Cooking is perhaps one of the best ways to make your kids appreciate the value of home-made food and eating healthy. Because kids get bored easily, you need to find creative ways to make it interesting for them.
