What is a Low Carb Diet Plan?

A low carb diet plan is a dietary guide for people who want to lose weight and follow a meal plan that only employs limited carbohydrate consumption. As a dieter starts using a low carb diet plan, he/she will be able to find out more about carbohydrates and foods that are low of it. Basically, there are three different types of carbohydrates which are starches, sugar and fiber. Because carbs are used for easy energy source of the body, all these 3 types can be used. But not all carbs are healthy which is why there are “good carbs” and “bad carbs”
and it is with a low carb diet plan where a dieter can keep away from the bad carbs.

What is a Low Carb Diet Plan for?

There are many reasons why low carb diet plans are made but in most cases, it is used for weight loss. Lots of people follow this diet because apart from being effective for weight loss it also has a wide variety of tasty foods as part of the diet. Dieters often say that a low carb diet plan is easy to follow if there is careful planning on the meal plan of the diet.

How does a Low Carb Diet Plan work?

As stated earlier, low carb diet plans are especially made for the purpose of weight loss. How a low carb diet plan does this is through:

  • Water weight loss – when our bodies take in low amounts of carbs, the burns down glycogen and in glycogen there is a large amount of water because it is burned down, the water is being eliminated from the body through urination thus weight loss eventually occurs.
  • Suppressing the appetite – there still isn’t enough scientific explanation as to why appetite is suppressed when carb intake is lowered. Of course, if we don’t have the appetite, we don’t feel the need to eat up.
  • Giving that feeling of fullness – compared to fat and protein, carb takes the longest time to be broken down giving a feeling of fullness. Having that full feeling last is one good reason to not eat.

Basic Guidelines for a Low Carb Diet Plan

  • A low carb diet plan should mainly contain vegetables and foods that are rich in protein. In order for the diet to really work, your daily carb intake should have a maximum limit of 60 grams daily.
  • So that the diet won’t be that hard, you may cut down your carb intake by eating 2 slices of bread daily and nothing more. You can make bread part of any meal of the day or even as snack.
  • Just like bread, you may incorporate a single serving of fruit daily to any of your meals or make it your snacks or better yet make it as your dessert.
  • If you have finally adjusted to your low carb diet plan after a week or two, you can then continue making your diet plan filled with low carb foods.

Precaution on a Low Carb Diet Plan

According to the American Heart Association, a low carb diet plan is not the best dietary choice because it can make a person have higher risks of developing heart diseases, diabetes and certain types of cancer due to a diet that is not rich in essential nutrients and not healthy foods. Perhaps the reason why most of these diets really cause weight loss is due to the fluid loss happening in the body. But you can still make your low carb diet plan a healthy and balanced one by making sure you incorporate healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables. You may also keep an eye on the proportion of food intake and like most diets, make exercise a part of your weight loss process.

It is true that starting a new diet and leaving your old habits can be quite challenging. The low carb diet like other weight loss diets needs discipline in order for it to work. The low carb diet plan makes the diet easy to work with because you get to eat tasty and healthy foods with the help of your nutritionist or dietitian. Don’t forget exercise. No matter how well your diet plan is exercise is essential in order to effectively lose weight while getting active.
