Pregnancy is perhaps one of the greatest phenomenon’s that can happen to a woman. Although it is a time that can be exciting, there are also instances when health problems related to it can occur. It may be a fact that not all women experience these pregnancy-related health problems, it is still important to be educated about it.
If and when a woman is diagnosed to have pregnancy-related health problems, she along with her doctor will have to check if it is manageable at home or if she needs to be closely monitored at the hospital. Cases like this are considered to be complicated because the doctors are not only concerned of the mother but the child in her womb as well. These health problems do not just occur during the pregnancy but there are those that come out postpartum (after pregnancy).
Health Problems related to Pregnancy
Pregnancy-induced Diabetes (Gestational Diabetes)
If you have a family history of diabetes, there is that bigger chance that you develop diabetes if not early in your life, it could happen during your pregnancy. Diabetes that happens during pregnancy is termed as gestational diabetes. It can be managed by ensuring that the pregnant woman closely chooses which foods to eat and which ones to avoid. A healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and taking in prescribed meds such as insulin shots and close checking of blood sugar levels should be done. In most cases, women who have gestational diabetes are noted for delivering babies that are above the normal birth weight. If gestational diabetes is not properly managed, it could affect both mother and the baby.
Other Health Problems (Colds and Flu)
While a woman is pregnant, she may still be at risk of developing colds or flu but it should not be confused as something that is caused by pregnancy too. Before taking in medicines, have it checked by your doctor first to make sure that you avoid teratogenic medications or medications that may affect the baby.
More Serious Health Problems related to Pregnancy
There are symptoms that may be related to other more serious health problems such as:
Miscarriage
Symptoms include vaginal bleeding and tissues that pass through the vagina.Premature birth
Symptoms usually include abnormal vaginal discharge or fluid leakage from vagina, belly or pelvic or back pain.Preterm labor
This occurs when contractions start before the 37th week of pregnancy. Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, urinary problems (urinary tract infection), problems with urinating, open skin sore or blisters and itching.Preeclampsia
This condition is classified through the changes in blood pressure. Classic symptoms may include abnormal swelling in face, hands and feet, headache, vision problems, pain in upper right belly, nausea, vomiting.Depression
There may be pregnant women who may experience mood swings or may feel sad or anxious. Although it is normal to feel different emotions as you are expecting a child, it is still advisable to consult your doctor. Pregnant women who get depressed will most likely find it hard to bond with their child after birth. But nonetheless, depression may be cured to avoid the occurrence of postpartum blues or depression after birth.Postpartum Health Problems
When the mother has already delivered her baby, this phase is called postpartum period. It is during this phase where the mother’s body slowly returns to its condition now that she is no longer carrying a child. Every woman will have a different experience during postpartum. There are women who go through it smoothly while there are those who develop health problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure. This is why, during pregnancy it is important to have a healthy lifestyle by eating the right set of foods and watching one’s weight closely.
